G10 I&S -An Inquiry into Chinese Nationalism

G10 Unit 3 - The Rise of Nationalism 1910-1939

This Unit establishes the historical context in Europe and Asia for Grade 10 students considering doing DP History in Grade 11. It gives them insight as to why the major powers in the world during this period both moderated and intensified their nationalism at this time. Some like China were transitioning from an imperial system toward a modern Republic using Dr Sun Yatsen's Three Principles to create civic nationalism within the State. While others in Europe like Britain and Germany re-evaluated the destructive nature of their ethnic nationalism after World War One, and strengthened their liberal democracies to avoid future conflict but failed in their aims. The result divided nations on the nature of their national identity and led to extremist politics on the left and right. For their summative assessment, students created an exhibition on nationalism from 1910-1939 for the Imperial War Museum in London, it produced some interesting insights into a formative period for the major powers of the world, as shown by the example of Victoria Kao's China exhibit presented here. It is an impressive effort, and a fine example of critical thinking and how the IB MYP encourages students to synthesize ideas and concepts to improve their understanding of history and the world.
