Present our love of books critically (Part 1)

In the school year 2019/20, Grades 9 and 10 students have a semester-long Reading/Writing Workshop, with a goal of sharpening their critical reading and writing skills across subjects and of preparing for their DP learning. In the midterm assessment, students gave individual presentations based on their self-chosen books at the beginning of the semester. They had about 10 weeks to read half-way through the book, with guiding questions as "What is the thesis statement in the introduction of the book?" "Is it conveyed explicitly or implicitly?" "What is the structure of the table of content?" "What are some highlights in the first half of the book?" "How do you evaluate these highlights?"

All the books were chosen from current library collection, as a way to further connect students to using library resources and promote the love for reading in general. Students had the opportunity to speak to the instructor (who is also the teacher librarian) to match their personal interests to book choices at the beginning of the semester. Through this consultation, students practiced to elaborate on their personal (reading) interests and seek advice from librarians. This is a preparation for students' learning beyond this IB journey.

Below are the slides from a Grade 10 student, Kate Kao. Throughout the year, she has been demonstrating her enthusiasm in reading and keen observation of details. She chose a book on Piaget to discuss his influence on modern developmental psychology.
