At KSS we try to create opportunities to apply learning between multiple subject areas. Recently, students took part in an interdisciplinary unit for Mathematics and Design. In mathematics, they reviewed graphing linear relations, graphing inequalities, and determining intersection points. Students were then asked to take that knowledge and transform it into computer code by producing an accurate graphing calculator complete with a user interface. This project challenged students in several ways. First, many students realized that their grasp of mathematical concepts needed a deeper and more conceptual understanding in order for them to transform equations into functioning code. Second, they realized that there are multiple ways to code a program. Every student came up with a unique and creative way to satisfy the criteria for this assessment. - P. Rosevere
