Service Club Highlights: High School Stray Animal Club Activity

Updated: Jun 26

On October 26th, our high school's Stray Animal Care Club initiated a school-wide towel donation event to provide much-needed assistance to the Wang Fumei Stray Animal Shelter located in Shilin. The club's noble mission is to support and advocate for stray animal organizations in Taiwan. Furthermore, the club engages in monthly volunteer services at nearby animal shelters, where they interact with and care for the furry friends. Through participating in these meaningful club activities, members cultivate and demonstrate qualities such as "balanced," "communicators," and "caring," as outlined in the IB learner profile.

In this remarkable towel donation event, the club members had the rare opportunity to learn in advance about the CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service) projects required in DP. From design and planning to promoting the event and taking final action, members utilized their precious lunch breaks to discuss and coordinate various aspects of the event. They also created posters, flyers, and announcements to raise awareness and encourage donations from the school community.

At the end of the event, the Stray Animal Care Club successfully collected an impressive number of 311 towels, yoga mats, and blankets for the Wang Fumei Stray Animal Shelter, ensuring the dogs have a cozy and comfortable winter ahead. The club also received positive feedback and appreciation from the shelter staff and the animals themselves. This event is not just a fundraiser; it is also an opportunity to acquire and apply different skills, showcasing the students' compassion, social responsibility, and sense of participation. Through their involvement, members not only learned the content and objectives of CAS projects, but also gained a profound understanding of the far-reaching impact that genuine service and compassion could bring. Activities like these organized by the Stray Animals Club foster a culture of participation in social services among students throughout the school and expand the reach of love and care more broadly, contributing a valuable and commendable effort to society.

Our club went to Shipai MRT Station for fundraising on 3/26. It was a great experience for all the members ! We start from preparing the entire project from scratch, starting from painting the donation box, choosing a location, and writing a proposal. Although we only went there for twenty minutes, we ended up raising NT$2,823, which was a good result for us. We will also donate the entire amount to the stray animal shelter on April 22nd. This fundraising is very meaningful to us because it is the first time that everyone has taken to the streets to raise funds. Although we were rejected countless times, we still learned to communicate with strangers and promote stray animals in Taiwan along the way.
