Last week, students at the Lanya Campus had their Science lessons in the lab for the first time this semester. They put on their lab coats and goggles and listened attentively as their teachers explained lab safety guidelines.
Grade 6 students learnt about thermometers to understand more about heat and temperature. They first learnt how to measure temperature using their thermometers. Using the same principles, they then made their own thermometers using red dye in water.
Grade 7 students learnt how to use a microscope. They first looked at pre-made slides and drew the image they saw. Next, they looked at their own hair under the microscope. They also compared the differences between pieces of hair from a Taiwanese student, a Croatian student, and a half-Taiwanese, half-British student. The results seem to show that Caucasians have thinner hair than Asians!
For Grade 8 students, the statements of inquiry in the first part of their task were:
1. How does the amount of iron acetate dissolved in water affect the color of the solution?
2. How does the temperature of the water (solvent) affect the amount of potassium nitrate (solute) dissolved in water?
The next part of their task was to design an experiment to determine how the solubility of brown sugar in water changes as the temperature of the water increases.
