DP G12 ESS Fieldwork in Daan Park

We have learned theoretical methods to measure biotic factors in an ecosystem by using ‘Quadrats’ and ‘Transects’ estimation to brief collect data on biodiversity in a given environment. Today, we went to Daan Park to apply knowledge that we learned from our lesson into practical investigation, it helps us to better understand the operation of biotic factors estimation.

‘Random Quadrats’ sampling requires us to take 10 quadrats estimation in a 100m^2 area. We have decided to estimate the Plantago Asiatica species that is commonly observed in Daan Park. We found that 8 out of 10 quadrats contain the P. Asiatica species. Our investigation result suggests that the percentage frequency of the species is 80%, with certain percentage of estimation error due to smaller sample size. Although there might be a little deviation from the actual number, it still tells us a biodiversity in the observed area.

Another estimation method is ‘Transect Estimation’, which is used to measure the changes on both biotic and abiotic factors along a environmental gradient. We found that species richness of Dichondra Repens and Plantago Asiatica decreases as it goes further from the roots of trees. The temperature remains relatively stable while the pH value reduces slightly as the species richness decrease. This investigation shows the relationship between biotic and abiotic factors

Through today’s fieldwork, I have learned the practical application of estimating non-motile species, as well as abiotic factors such as pH level and temperature. This investigation helps me to strengthen my understanding under the topic of ecosystem and ecology.
